So clearly, there’s a lot of yummy horror in this one. And let’s not forget the more-mundane-but-just-as-awful horrors like bullies and addiction. Or the serial killer who may or may not have been executed for his crimes. Like Ollie’s new friend Jake, a drug dealer who also dabbles in black magic. Now, those things alone would make for a compelling story, but wait! There’s more! Because when Nate’s father dies and the family moves into his childhood home, every horrific bit of the past gets stirred up and mixed with the OTHER terrible things happening in the present. Despite their loving, close-knit family unit, each of them is struggling in their own way: Nate, with the ghost of his father and the abuse inflicted on him as a child, Maddie, with the things she can’t quite remember from her own childhood, and Ollie, who sees and feels entirely too much of everyone else’s pain. In The Book of Accidents (for some reason, that name just sings to me), we meet the Graves family – police officer Nate, his artist wife Maddie, and their teenage son Oliver. But the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the caffeine is kicking in, and oh my beloved nerdlings, I have just finished reading a most delicious book. Good morning, Duckies! Summer is finally here, and the fresh-cut grass smells so good, I am not even going to complain about my allergies, and darlings, if there’s one thing I’m usually good for, it’s a lengthy gripe session. (*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
